What is a heat pump? Well, Carrier heat pumps are devices used to heat and/or air-condition a building. Most conventional furnaces heat a room by adding heat – they burn fuel, such as natural gas, or wood, or use an electric heating element. By contrast, Carrier heat pumps transfer or move the heat from someplace else.

Carrier heat pumps that are used as heating devices take heat from a low-temperature source and expel it somewhere else in the building, raising the temperature.

Carrier heat pumps can also be used to cool — and your home probably already contains one: a refrigerator. It contains machinery that cools (removes heat) from the interior of the refrigerator, keeping the food stored inside cool. Carrier heat pumps do the same thing, just on a much larger scale. They take heat out of the room to be cooled and transfer it to the air outside or to the ground.

What is included in a typical installation of Carrier heat pumps ? –A thermostat – this controls the operation of the heat pump system as a whole. Today’s thermostats are digital, and very easy to operate. –An air handler – this circulates the air throughout your home –The heat pump unit itself – this unit is responsible for the transfer of the heat from one location to another –Air cleaner – filters out pollution and dust as the air circulates.

The price you will pay for various Carrier heat pumps will depend on the size of the unit you need, the type (air or ground source), optional units attached to it and whether it is a single purpose or dual purpose unit (heating, cooling, or both).

One thing to note: you cannot save money on new Carrier heat pumps by trying to do the installation yourself. You MUST use a trained professional. NO EXCECPTIONS! This is because they must use specialized techniques for installation and special tools not available to the non-specialist. Since all heating and air conditioning units are expensive, make sure any Carrier heat pumps you purchase are installed by qualified persons.

    I decided to go for a heat pump upgrade last fall and after hours of research and getting a quote from 6 local HVAC contractor, finally decided that it would be a Carrier. I chose it on the basis of the cost, the heat & the quietness. So far, the heat pump has delivered flawless performance. My bills have gone down and the heat pump heats up the home even when the temperature goes below freezing. Couldn’t be happier!

    The Carrier heat pump we installed last year (2012) is horribly loud! It is not the running of it that is loud, but the start up. When it kicks on, it startles the neighbors! I despise it. Stay far away, unless you live near an airport, and noise is no concern.

      I agree with David. My Carrier was loud enough on starting, that my next door neighbor commented he thought there was a defect with it. I had noticed it started noisily but always quieted down within about 15 seconds. So I did get the installer to come out to see if the noise indicated a problem. He said my system was working properly (didn’t comment on whether the noise was typical though). He installed the unit originally, so I don’t know if I trust his possibly biased judgement. Regardless, the unit has been in service for 17 years, and with only one capacitor replacement. However I wonder how much better the unit could be without the starting vibration throughout the years.

        I actually have a Trane Heat Pump that makes a really loud noise on start up and for the longest time thought something was wrong with it, I even had the installer come out a few times after and they all mentioned that it was a normal process of the “scroll” compressor. I have two HVAC friends in the industry and had them come to my home and they both said the same thing, its normal. Its just something a scroll compressor does on start up. So not sure if this helps you all or not but I wouldn’t blame it on the manufacturer because they all do it.

    This and Most websites don’t review how quiet heat pump fans and compressors run.

    Nov, 5, 2013 I just bought a Carrier Infinity Greenspeed unit and HATE IT !!! It’s only @ three weeks old and very disappointed and upset buying Carrier, it’s loud and has stopped working, to make matters worse, it’s getting cold outside.

    PLEASE DON’T EVER BUY A CARRIER UNIT !!! If You want to get ripped off like I did then buy one but I would highly recommend from personal experience NEVER BUY CARRIER !!!!

      Have nothing but trouble with Carrier 17 SEER heat pump and air handler. Problems started day after it was installed in 2009 and now (2014) the capacitor and compressor die. Have had more than 2 dozen service visits including replacement of three computer boards in the Carrier air handler. Do NOT buy. “Customer service” is worse than their product..

      I have the same problem with my Infinity 25HNA6. Bought in 2007, New pump in 2012 and now 3 years later it needs a new pump again in 2015. I was thinking of updating to a greenspeed but it looks like you did not have any luck with that one either.
      What brand did you end up going to?

    Our first heat pump didn’t last 10 yrs.. Lost all it’s Freon and then had other major problems. It was always noisy. I don’t think it was leveled properly. They didn’t bring anything with them to help level the machine. Our new one is much quieter and I suspect will last a lot longer. I don’t think our first one even paid for itself.

    Love, love, love this heat pump. Here in Atlantic Canada, where we can get cold snaps of -20 C or lower for a week or two, this unit operates flawlessly. Very quiet, can’t even hear it running. Auxilliary heat will come on about 5 minutes every hour or so when temps are very low, but even at that, I will save at least 1500.00 this year compared to the oil furnace I took out. And I even got a 20% break on my home insurance. What’s not to love.

      Mike- which unit model number did you end up going with ?? We are considering a Comfort entry level single stage for Nova Scotia– do you think we should upgrade to a variable speed – bigger unit ?/House is only 1500 square feet .

    I bought a 4 ton Carrier Deluxe heat pump unit in April 2014 or approximately 16 months ago. I bought the premium unit because my dealer said it was the best unit Carrier made and would lower our electric bill. He was correct it did lower our monthly bill about 20% over the other 2 Carrier units we purchased in the last 33 years. However, this past August, in the heat or the summer for some unknown reason the heat strips in the unit got stuck and stayed on drawing high amperage causing our home to heat instead of cool during the hottest month of the year. My wife called our dealer and he said the outside temperature is hot and that he did not feel the need to check the unit. Consequently we received a $900 electric bill for the month of August when normally it should have been about $280. We complained and the dealer finally sent a service man who confirmed the heat strips were defectively stuck on no matter what he did to try to fix it. Under Carrier warranty, the heat strip circuit board was replaced by the service man and was apparently defective, since the unit is now working properly. However, both Carrier and our dealer refused to reimburse us for the excessive $900 light bill and a $175 service charge. So much for paying extra for the BEST CARRIER UNIT, IT WILL BE MY LAST ONE! CAUTION WHEN YOU BUY A CARRIER, WE GOT THE SHAFT!!

      The Heat Strip relay also stuck on one of our Infinity units last July. When ever the unit was running, the heat strips were on. Needless to say it wasn’t very efficient with the AC fighting the heat strips.

    Our Carrier broke down 4 times in the 1st year, no lemon laws to cover that. After that it broke down at least 1 time each year costing hundreds of $ in electric bills and then repair bills as it didn’t quit when it broke just malfunctioned sucking power as it ran. Have replaced the mother board twice, motor once and various other parts. Now with a burned out furnace we will replace the entire thing, BUT NOT WITH ANOTER CARRIER, WE’VE HAD ENOUGH SHAFT!

    My two Carrier heat pumps (SEER 12) installed in 1996 in Texas. They started to have problems from 2003 and onward. Everything has been replaced except compressor. It’s still leaking Freon like crazy even after one year of evap coil replacement. We have to spend at least $600-700/year to make it going. My neighbor’s Trane heat pump installed a year later and barely had any services.

    I purchased a Carrier Heat Pump because Carrier use to be the best. NOT ANY MORE. Run while you have the chance!! First the thermostat went in the first month (service recall) and now the coil TXV unit (service recall). The guarantee isn’t worth crap because it’s only for the parts in which Carrier didn’t manufacturer correctly to begin with so you have to pay to install which is close to $1,000. Their customer service department can barely answer any questions at all. They couldn’t tell me how long it is to install the piss poor quality coil to be replaced and service bulletin information you don’t get that tells you about service recalls. To add insult to injury I missed the rebate program because I was to busy building a garage and deck cover at the same time and they to cheap to honor a rebate. I will never ever buy from Carrier again. Run to Trane.

    Installed a 1 1/2 ton unit to replace the same size Trane that I had for 11 years. The coils developed some leaks so opted to go with a new unit. My local repair guy was a carrier dealer and convinced me to go with a carrier unit. Big mistake. The unit can barely keep the area of the house it is supposed to cool within 15 degrees of the outside temperature. They came back out and changed the variable speed fan from normal to high. Airflow was stronger but didn’t cool any better. Major lesson hear was it probably takes a 2 ton carrier to compete with a 1 1/2 ton Trane. Second lesson: should have replaced the coils on the Trane and I’d have a cool house.

    Purchased a Carrier Heat Pump with the construction of a new house less than 2 years ago. The Compressor failed in 6 months, cost me $400 labor to replace it, compressor was covered under 1 yr warranty. Six months later (last week) during winter the “demand defrost control” failed and the unit completed iced up causing the entire unit to fail. All of this in less than 2 years. Nothing covered by warranty any more. Will be replacing this unit with another brand, as this is a piece of JUNK! Thought Carrier had a good reputation, but not by me. (Had a York in another house 20 years ago, it never had a service call in 15 years, in a colder climate) I will never buy a Carrier again.

    I am at dilemma!! I am purchasing a new unit today or tomorrow and every manufacturer has the same negative comments.
    Carrier
    York
    Trane
    Rheem
    Rudd
    etc etc.
    I want an all electric with cooper coils. I decided on the Carrier unit but I am really concerned

    I purchased a new home built by CalAtlantic builders in South Carolina. I was happy to have Carrier because I have had 30 years of great service in other homes. BUT. First the air flow was wrong, dealer fixed that. The 2 years into having the unit the fan motor went out. Dealer had to order, Two days with 100 degree heat. He told me that the new units had motor problems. Something about a new style,( cheaper).
    90 days later when it is 20 degrees, Fan motor goes outagain. Dealer had one in stock, Neighbors have told me and I have heard it also, Loud noise when until goes into defrost. Dealer said that is ok. I am dissappointed and that I have contacted Carrier and they will not call me back. Unit is less that 3 years old and this is junk.

    Carrier Greenspeed heat pump installed 2014 to replace 20 yo Trane heat pump. Only problem has been the infinity touch thermostat failing that was reporting 90 degrees inside and calling for a/c when it was in the teens outside. Not good. If this happens to anyone and you need heat as I did while waiting for the dealer to get a new infinity thermostat – in mtc mode run a system check on the heat pump which allows you to set a timed test of the unit. Doing this forced the heat on and I set the timer for the test to 90 minutes. My biggest gripe with the Greenspeed heat pump isnt the unit but the lack of Carrier techs who are familiar with it. I waited extra cold days for the one knowledgeable tech and he never showed up. Another tech showed up and took my diagnosis of the failed thermostat and returned a week later with the new infinity thermostat. He mounted the new thermostat to the wall and was done. After I paid 144.00 for the install, I finished his job and set up the terminal cut off switch in the condensate overflow pan.

    Carrier ductless units are installed in my flat in the main room and the bedroom, each with individual remotes.

    Key disappointments are: 1)Thermostat, where is it? If it’s in the heat pump/cooler on the wall, that’s about 8 feet above the floor. Heat setting at 71 degrees in Colorado results in 65 degrees at living area. and 2) Lack of programmability. No way to set it to a constant temp and allow for overnight lowering. Requires constant vigilance and control… This IS a rental and they definitely sought to avoid central heating.

    We have had a Carrier HVAC for 20 some years with few problems. So when we built our retirement home in NC I wanted another Carrier product. What a mistake!!
    We installed a Carrier Model CH14NB036 split system heat pump in new construction and closed on house in October 2018 with brand new Carrier heat pump. In November 2019 it had a compressor failure. The service technician said Carrier used to use Copeland compressors that were made in the states and they were great; but Carrier had started installing LG compressors made in Korea more recently and they seemed to have more failures. With just one year of use on our heat pump, the compressor had to be replaced. The part was under warranty and Carrier replaced it with another LG compressor. But we had to pay $700 for the service call and labor to replace the compressor. In May 2020, less than 6 months later the replacement LG compressor failed again. Although the part is under warranty, I don’t want to pay another $700 for labor to replace the compressor fearing it will fail again in 6 months. Our service tech asked Carrier if they could send a Copeland compressor. They said no.

    The local Carrier person suggested we contact Carrier and ask for a new heat pump, rather than a replacement compressor. Multiple calls and LONG waits to speak to someone and still waiting for a Carrier Manager to investigate. Meanwhile the temperature in the house located in NC is 88 degrees and likely to get hotter this week. It is early June 2020…we cannot go through summer in these temperatures at our age without fear of heat stroke. Our Carrier heat pump – which is less than 2 years old- is as useful as a brick. Still waiting to hear from the Carrier Case Manager who was supposed to call the service tech last week. Is anyone surprised the Case Manager never called?

    I am trying to decide, with sweat rolling down my face: pay another $700 for a cheap#%$ LG Compressor to be installed or borrow money to get a new heat pump made by anyone other than Carrier. And how do I let other unsuspecting consumers know about this dreadful product and service. Before you buy a Carrier, ask about the compressor!

    The worst 7000 I ever spent had nothing but trouble since we’ve had it cannot get it to heat right keeps calling for propane we bought it to save are propane the unit is a year n 8 months don’t waist your money on a carrier shop elsewhere

    We had a Carrier mini split heat pump installed 9 months ago in two rooms. It will not hold a steady temperature ever. On the heat setting the temperature just keeps climbing and climbing until it is very uncomfortably hot. The same in the cool setting. It gets colder and colder and you swear it could begin snowing inside. I hate this Carrier unit. We have had about six service calls in nine months. I wish we would have chosen the Mitsubishi unit, the Japanese always take pride in their work. I called for service 4- days ago and still have not been given an appointment date. My heat pump is non functioning at this time and I have turned on the baseboard heating. Do NOT buy Carrier!

    We bought a new Carrier heatpump, furnace and wifi thermostat, worked fine for 5 months then the heatpump stopped, called the dealer several times over 3 months and still no one has come to repair it. $25,000 with tax and 3MONTHS still no one even bothers to lie to me, they just dont bother to come even when they say they are coming. So I called another dealer, they told me they cant fix it unless I pay for it. No warranty. I called Carrier customer service, they told me that was unacceptable and they will escalate the issue and get me resolve. A week and half later they email me and tell me they are sorry, they cant help me but they are pleased to give me a voucher for $250 to go toward the repair. And a list of dealers willing to take my money. So that was there resolve for a guy that spent a small fortune on their products that lasted 5 months, so no warranty and sorry about my luck.
